The Simpsons | Episode Guide | Season Nine
Lisa the Skeptic

An angel fails to delight Lisa.

Episode 5F05
Written by David S. Cohen
Directed by Neil Affleck
Also starring: Pamela Hayden, Tress MacNeille, Maggie Roswell, Russi Taylor
Special guest voices: Marcia Wallace (as Ms Krabappel), Phil Hartman (as Lionel Hutz), Stephen Jay Gould (as himself)

Premise: During a school archaeological dig, Lisa finds the skeleton of an angel on the site where a new shopping mall is to be erected. Homer takes it home and, while the experts argue its validity, and the clerics its divinity, charges people to come and see it. Which is fine, until one day the angel flies away.

Features: Mr Burns, Smithers, Carl, Lenny, Moe, Barney, Patty, Selma, Grampa, Jasper, Kent Brockman, Chief Wiggum, Mrs Wiggum, Lou, Eddie, Agnes Skinner, Skinner, Miss Hoover, Groundskeeper Willie, Otto, Superintendent Chalmers, Milhouse, Martin, Nelson, Jimbo, Dolph, Kearney, Sherri and Terri, Lewis, Richard, Wendell, Ralph, Uter, Snake, Rev. Lovejoy, Helen Lovejoy, the Flanderses, Mr van Houten, Mrs van Houten, Dr Hibbert, Sylvia, Quimby, Bumblebee Guy, Dr Frink, Android's Dungeon Guy, Krusty, Sideshow Mel, Apu, Manjula, Sanjay, Herman, Cletus, Judge Snyder.

Couch: The family can't get near the couch because it's now part of an occupied male sauna.

Trivia: Homer sings a pastiche of Up, Up and Away, the 1966 hit for the Johnny Mann Singers, substituting balloon with motorboat. He watches Springfield's Dumbest Criminals on TV.

Look out for: Smithers, believing the world is to end, finally letting go and giving Mr Burns a snog. Much good may it do him.

Notes: A brilliant spin on crowd hysteria and its manipulation by big businesses, or as it is here, the building contractors. Lisa's firm belief that angels don't exist and the whole thing is a scam is borne out, but nevertheless, there is a lovely moment where even she begins to question her own convictions. A good episode for both her and her relationship with Marge.
