When premiered in January 1993 in the USA, the show became the highest
rated series premiere in syndication history. It remains a consistent
top ten performer in the US ratings.
The series has attracted a number of guest stars over the years
including Oscar-winning actress Louise Fletcher plus Chris Sarandon,
Mary Crosby, John Glover, Brian Keith, Iggy Pop and many more.
'Trials and
Tribble-ations' was produced to commemorate the thirtieth anniversary of Star
Trek. It features state-of-the-art Forrest Gump style technology which
allowed the Deep Space Nine characters to merge with Kirk and his crew
in the classic 'Troubles With Tribbles' from the Original Series.
Avery Brooks, who plays Captain Sisko, has done extensive work with the
Smithsonian Institute's Program in Black American Culture.
Avery Brooks recognises that Deep Space Nine follows a grand
humanitarian tradition within the Star Trek dynasty:
''Star Trek Deep Space Nine provides an opportunity to reinforce how
critical it is to find a way to live together.''
Michael Dorn, who plays Lt. Commander Worf, has a long affiliation with
Star Trek. He served for seven years on the Enterprise in The Next
Generation before being transferred to Deep Space Nine as diplomatic
liaison. He was also the first Next Generation crew member to appear in
one of the Star Trek Features - playing his own grandfather in 'Star
Trek VI - The Undiscovered Country.'.
