No sooner had Buffy returned home after her spell hiding as an anonymous waitress in the city (see 'Anne') than she discovered a dead stray cat in the basement. At the same time Joyce had hung an evil-looking Nigerian mask on the wall, not realising that it has the power to resurrect the dead. Its powers revive the cat, and then human corpses from Sunnydale�s twelve cemeteries!

The mask embodies the power of a demon, Ovu Mobani. If one of the zombies puts it on, it will make them the demon incarnate. One of Joyce�s friends, Pat, is killed as they battle the zombies. Reanimated, she puts the mask on, but Buffy is able to destroy the demon by driving a spade into the source of its paralysing power: its eyes.
