Returning to Sunnydale shortly after the death of The Master, after a lengthy period of absence, punkish vampires Spike and insane girlfriend Drusilla arrive to offer their services to The Anointed One.
Though Spike tells Willow he is "only 126 years old", Giles' previous research says he's 200 years old - perhaps he feels he has to lie about his age to impress the girls?
He was formerly known as William the Bloody, and earned his new nickname from his habit of torturing his victims with railway spikes, He will be a formidable opponent for Buffy and the gang: hes already killed two Slayers.
Spike and Drusilla waste no time in destroying The Anointed One, and taking his place as the leader of Sunnydales vampire community, promising "From now on were going to have a little less ritual and a little more fun around here".
After leaving Sunnydale as part of a deal with Buffy (in 'Becoming Part II') a lovesick Spike returned to Sunnydale without Drusilla, who had ditched him in Brazil for a chaos demon. She then left him for a fungus demon.
By Season Four, Spike returns again. He's going out with newly-vamped-up Harmony, who used to be Willow's nemesis before she became an undead airhead. The relationship doesn't last.
Spike is kidnapped by the mysterious initiative, and finds himself "de-fanged". Unable to kill or inflict pain anymore, he turns to the Scooby Gang for help. A reluctant ally, he's keen to remind them at every opportunity that he's still Evil. But will they believe him?
