The Who - My Generation
Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, the late John Entwistle and Keith
Moon alias The Who remarkably never had a number one single either side of the
Atlantic.
They burst into the charts in November 1965 with
the ultimate teen-angst anthem - My Generation. The first the public
at large knew about The Who's destructive tendencies was when they
appeared on Ready Steady Go to promote their first single, I Can't
Explain, and Townshend and Moon promptly destroyed their equipment.
In keeping with their image as the bad boys of rock
- something even Roger Daltrey's appearance alongside 'The One And
Only' Chesney Hawkes in 1990's 'Buddy's Song' couldn't dent - The
Who became as well known for wrecking things as for their music.
It didn't matter if it was their own equipment or their hotel room,
it got broken.
Like many of their contemporaries, The Who suffered
their share of misfortune. Drummer Keith Moon died of a drug overdose
in 1978 and with him, according to the surviving members of the
band, so did The Who. Nonetheless they continued touring and recording
intermittently, even playing a gig in Springfield on the Simpsons,
before bassist John Entwistle died of a heart attack on the eve
of a US tour in June 2002.
