Trumpton
'Here is the clock, the Trumpton clock. Telling the time steadily,
sensibly, never too quickly, never too slowly. Telling the time
for Trumpton'
Trumpton was the main town in the county of Trumptonshire.
It had a town hall, with a clock tower, numerous shops, and a fine
market square in the middle of which stood a statue of Queen Victoria.
The town also had an attractive park with a bandstand.
At the end of each episode the people from Trumpton and nearby areas
would gather around it to listen and watch the Trumpton fire brigade
seranade them.
Why this did not clash with the six o'clock dance
at Chigley was never explained...
The series was narrated by Brian Cant who often
spoke directly to the characters in the show. He did have to get
some help when he continued to talk to characters after the show
was off the air though.
Despite the show's concentration on the fire brigade,
there appears only to have ever been one fire in Trumpton, at the
bakers. Other stories centred around rescuing
cats from trees or retrieving the mayor's hat which had blown off
in a gust of wind.
Perhaps to even the score, puppetmaker Gordon Murray
claims that he burnt all the puppets left in his possession after
the show was axed.
