George and band Culture Club arrived on the music scene amidst a flurry of controversy. He had perfect make-up, had his hair in dreadlocks and wore what can only
be described as dresses. It's not a surprise that many mistook him for a girl.
Born George O'Dowd in south London, Boy George was one of pop's biggest talking points and was often in the tabloids.
He did many things before forming the Culture Club: milliner, clothes
designer, DJ-ing at London clubs and was even a make-up artist for
the Royal Shakespeare Company.
He had a number of hits in the eighties such as Do You Really
Want To Hurt Me? and Karma Chameleon. The band's videos were memorable. One was set in the American deep south, but was filmed on a wet afternoon on a particularly uninspiring English riverside.
Ultimately George's involvement
with drugs brought his downfall but he made a solo comeback in 1987
with a cover of Everything I Own. It made it to the Number 1
spot.
