First there were rollerskates, then skateboards, and - in 1999
- microscooters.
For about £100 you could ride to work on a briefcase-sized
collapsing scooter.
Why did they catch on? Who knows. But for about six months they
were everywhere - usually slung over the shoulder of a trendy young
man with bleached spiky hair and a tank top.
When kids started getting cheap imitations for Christmas, the scooters
lost their cool and were discarded.
