With Val increasingly busy on location, a fourth presenter was needed in the studio. Enter Lesley, a member of the Young Generation dance troupe, created originally for The Rolf Harris Show. Lesley first appeared in an item teaching Val, John and Peter a routine to the tune of River Deep, Mountain High sung by Harry Nilsson. With no major fanfare, Lesley joined the team.
Like Val, Lesley was quite proper and posh, and was thus able to keep John and Peter in line. But either because the times were changing, or because she insisted on it, Lesley wasn't afraid to muck in or to take on some of the more dangerous assignments.
The introduction of Lesley proved that the Blue Peter format was now unbreakable.
These were the days of Rags the pony, Percy Thrower in the garden, Special Assignments and death-defying stunts - all held together with the obligatory sticky backed plastic.
