With Simon Groom leaving for pastures new, Blue Peter needed a new presenter. Step forward Mark Curry, who like Groom was from the north.

But Mark was far from just another regional accent. His work on Treasure Houses (a Blue Peter spin-off) and The Saturday Picture Show proved that he could present serious subjects and keep a level head while presenting a live programme.

It was safe to say Mark was less of an action man than co-host Peter Duncan, and so when Peter left, someone equally adventurous was needed. Enter Caron Keating, daughter of television and radio star Gloria Hunniford, who would prove plucky and a dedicated follower of fashion.

With Janet Ellis leaving to have a baby another vacancy arose. Impressed by her role in Seaview, Biddy Baxter auditioned Yvette Fielding. After her second attempt she became the show's youngest presenter, at just 18 and a half.

Blue Peter had found a fun new team to take children through the final years of the 80s.
