Classic TV | Rentaghost
Introduction

Waiting here to spirit you away - wahey! Rentaghost was a childrens telly stalwart for many years, running for nearly sixty episodes from 1975 to 1984.

Written by Bob Block (who went on to do Galloping Galaxies), it featured a group of ghosts trying to set up their own business enterprise.

The phantom businessmen were a motley bunch:

Timothy Claypole the cod-medieval court jester's was the most memorable.
Miss Popov, the ghost with hayfever.
Hazel McWitch, the very Scottish ghost.
Dobbin the hilarious pantomime horse.
And, of course, Mister and Mistress Meaker, the long suffering suburbanites.

Their plans always went very, very wrong, with hair-raising slapstick consequences. Like people turning into Batman. Or falling asleep.

The joke book humour flew thick and fast, often followed by lines like "Thank you for resurrecting that joke for its fiftieth birthday!" delivered straight to camera.
