A man with a potato for his head. What did you think it was going
to be?
He'd been around for a while - he was 50 in 2002
- but it was in 1964 that Potato went plastic. Gone was the stinky
old organic potato, and hello new precision moulded man-made spud.
An added bonus with the space age 1964 edition was
that the Plastic Mr Potato Head could store spare facial features
inside his horny carapace.
You'd expect that something as simple as a plastic
potato, which you can stick facial expressions on, would long since
have been abandoned by the Playstation generation. But an appearance
in 1995's Toy Story gave sales a fresh boost, along with those of
Slinkie dogs. You can see why the makers of Barbie, who refused
permission for her to feature in the original film were anxious
to have her included in the sequel.
