Given that this was the '60s and new materials were all the rage,
it was only a matter of time until some bright spark came up with
the plastic dress.
Pierre Cardin had already experimented with plastic
as a 'fabric' in Paris before John Bates designed the plastic dress
and had it modelled by Twiggy in 1965.
Whether she would have been known as Twiggy had
she not sweated off several pounds wearing a plastic dress is sadly
not recorded in accounts from the day.
