RealMedia: Wayne Hemingway recalls Carnaby Street's heyday

Carnaby St and boutiques

If anyone wanted to find the heart of Swinging London in 1965 they didn't need to stray too far from Oxford Circus tube station to find it. If you were anyone or wanted be be someone then Carnaby Street was the place to do it.

Like its successor, Chelsea's Kings Road, by 1965 Carnaby Street had become the epicentre for boutique stores with all the latest clothes for the fashion conscious Swinging Londoners. Its name was synonymous with youth culture, blending music, fashion and a new way of thinking.

Much of its success stemmed from the vision of John Stephens, a grocer's son from Glasgow, who owned several shops selling Mod gear. His greatest success was getting men to follow fashion just as much as women did, and look where that got us - the England football Captain wearing a sarong!
