Former Miss America Lynda Carter pulled on her bullet-proof bracelets and whipped out a gold lasso to snare villains everywhere as superheroine Wonder Woman.

Unlike Superman, she didn't need a phone box to change in, simply spinning around daintily while the transformation took place.

Over the years she saved the world from mad computer scientists, evil magicians, art thieves, time travellers and a deadly remote-controlled dolphin - all without smudging her make-up.
