One of the biggest stories of the year was been the shooting of John Lennon by Mark Chapman in New York. But who shot JR? Dallas turned Britain into a nation of soap addicts.

Philips released the Compact Disc player and an ice hockey player developed Roller Blades.

Sixpence pieces ceased to be legal tender after 30th June and three greats of the screen, Peter Sellers, Alfred Hitchcock and Steve McQueen died.
