It has long been rumoured that the FBI have a special name for cases that, due to inexplicable phenomena, can not be solved and until a solution can be found. They are filed under the letter 'X'.

Writer Chris Carter sensed an increased curiosity in the paranormal and used the legendary FBI paranormal investigation department as the basis for a new television series.

Super-cynic FBI Agent Dana Scully was teamed up with Agent Fox Mulder, whose interest in the paranormal stemmed from a belief that his sister had been abducted by aliens.

Their mission was to solve these unsolvable cases.
