Taking it's title 'The Real McCoy' from Elijah McCoy, a prolific
black inventor in the early 1900s, the series was a platform for
ethnic minority comedy writers and performers.
It achieved respectable audience figures but never crossed into the mainstream in the way that Goodness Gracious Me did in 1998.
The Real McCoy arguably paved the way for Goodness Gracious Me
partly by bringing together the talents of, amongst others, Meera
Syal and Kulvinder Ghir.
