Portishead

Trip Hop

Away from the glare of Britpop a distinctly separate scene was emerging from the Bristol underground.

Trip Hop was basically a British form of ambient vocal rap. Portishead, Tricky and Massive Attack pioneered the sound for a generation of wall-gazing and shuffle-dancers.

The biggest-selling act was Portishead, whose album Dummy became almost universally regarded as an instant classic.
