In July 1996 the Spice Girls went to No.1 for seven weeks with
their debut single, Wannabe.
What many predicted - and hoped - would be a one-hit wonder in
fact heralded the start of Girl Power, complete with hard-drinking,
power-undressing laddettes, fashion pregnancy and stack heels.
A host of Wannabe Spices emerged in the form of B*Witched, Atomic
Kitten and Girl Thing.
The 'movement' lasted until the end of the 90s, when it was succeeded
by a new era of teen-pop featuring barely adolescent boys and girls
like Britney, Christina, and the Sugababes.
