BBC Shakespeare DVDs

Ultimate BBC luvvie fest makes it to DVD.

Only in the 70s would you get the BBC doing something as wonderful and mad as The BBC Shakespeare - a six year project to film all 37 plays (even Pericles).

Produced by Cedric Messina and Dr. Jonathan Miller, the project roped in *everyone* who was anyone - you'd get John Cleese in Taming of the Shrew, Helen Mirren in As You Like It, or Anthony Hopkins as Othello.

We were overjoyed to discover on a recent shopping trip that four of these amazing plays have made it onto DVD.

Macbeth stars Nicol Williamson and Jane Lapotaire, while A Midsummer Night's Dream stars Helen Mirren and Robert Lindsay.

The fantastic King Lear stars Brenda Blethyn, Penelope Wilton and Michael Hordern - yes, that's right - Paddington Goes Mad!

Finally, in a cult fan's frothing frenzy, they've released Hamlet starring Derek Jacobi, Patrick Stewart and Lalla Ward... with music by Dudley Simpson. It's as good as it sounds.
