Record Hitchhiker's

Record audiences for online broadcasts of The Tertiary Phase.

Over a million people have logged on to the BBC Radio Player to listen to the new Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series.

The figure beats previous record audiences for Radio 4 stalwarts The Today Programme and The Archers.

BBC Director of Radio, Jenny Abramsky, expressed her satisfaction at a seminar recently:

"We are completely amazed by the impact of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," she told MediaGuardian.co.uk.

"It's important to listeners. We have to continue making these kind of programmes to make people go to the web."

A further series is currently in production for broadcast next year.

You can find out more about the series on the Radio 4 website, which has a transcript of a recent webchat with scriptwriter/director Dirk Maggs.
