Afternoon Detectives

Triple bill of investigative entertainment for Saturday afternoons.

BBC Two is currently screening The Rockford Files, Monk and The Return of Sherlock Holmes from 2.50pm on Saturdays.

Each perfect winter's afternoon of slobbing out in front of the gogglebox kicks off with classic series The Rockford Files. This starred James Garner as answerphone-owning PI Jim Rockford, taking on cases others had dropped.

New show Monk follows, at 3.40pm. A twist on the traditional detective series, it follows Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub), an obsessive compulsive detective who doesn't let his morbid phobias of germs, crowds, heights and many other things stop him cracking cases.

Finally, The Return of Sherlock Holmes fills in nicely from 4.20pm to when it's time to make the tea. Starring Jeremy Brett as Holmes, this is the acclaimed 1986 series, originally shown on ITV. We have to apologise for our own investigative abilities being a bit flawed for not reporting this earlier - it's been on for a few weeks now.
