Chubby Checker - The Twist

Teenagers loved it and parents were against it - until they realised it wasn't the dance of the devil but just a bit of harmless fun.

Although Chubby Checker released The Twist in 1960, it wasn't until 1961 that the follow up - Let's Twist Again hit the UK top ten and the dance craze really lifted off.

For those who have been in a cave since 1959 here's the official instructions on how to do the perfect twist!

1. Get Chubby Checker playing in the background.
2. Stand with one leg slightly in front of your body
3. Start twisting your body from the hips until you are in time with the music.
4. Once you have mastered that (which may take some time) you can then endeavour to crouch down whilst twisting and then stand back up again.

Some variations include twisting around to face a different direction and 'slow twisting' - but that's just showing off!
