The Graduate, the archetypal coming-of-age comedy.
Confused college graduate Hoffman is pulled every
which way by family and friends. He reacts by jumping into bed with
his father's golf buddy's wife.
He carries on the affair even after falling for
her daughter, leading to harsh reprisals and the famous car race
sequence featuring music penned by folksters Simon and Garfunkel.
Doris Day was originally approached to play the
elder temptress Mrs Robinson but turned it down stating it was too
trashy. Anne Bancroft took the role that became every teenage boy's
fantasy.
A London stage production of the film, starring
Kathleen Turner, was a huge success in 2000. Soon wagon trains of
ageing US actresses were heading for Britain to audition for the
part.
