Gerry Marsden

Gerry and the Pacemakers / Mersybeat

Gerry and the Pacemakers were the second Liverpool group to grace the airwaves but the first to hit number one. (The other band was a little known group called The Beatles).

Merseybeat was the name used to describe the 'scouse' side of music, which in the early 60's seemed the place to be for anyone who was anyone. Gerry Marsden and his band, the Pacemakers, were one of the Liverpudlian groups who enjoyed immediate success in the charts.

They scored number one hits with their first three singles 'How Do You Do It', 'I Like It' and 'You'll Never Walk Alone'. A remarkable feat not equalled until 20 years later by, another Merseyside group, Frankie Goes To Hollywood.

The band are perhaps best known for 'You'll Never Walk Alone' which has become an anthem for Liverpool Football Club fans.

Their 1964 hit 'Ferry Cross The Mersey' inspired a film musical, released in 1965, of the same name. It starred the lads as musicians in, wait for it, Liverpool and surprise surprise Cilla Black was also in the cast.
