RealMedia: How it all began

The Beatles breakthrough

A band that never became very widely known but who are worth a look at anyway. These four lads from Liverpool shook up not only the nation, but the world.

All of a sudden teenage girls everywhere were trying to decide whether John, Paul, George or Ringo was their favourite whilst the boys were getting in trouble for wearing their hair like their idols.

Known as the world's most successful group The Beatles have sold an estimated billion albums, with Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band being the biggest selling album in UK history.

Although the group split in 1970 they live on in the hearts and minds of millions. A new generation of Beatlemania was started in the mid 90's when the 'Anthology' album sold 10 million copies in less than a month and the follow up '1' broke the world record for the fastest selling album in history.
