Predatory playboy Alfie (Michael Caine) refers to women as 'it'
and has lots of sex, but grows a soul as the film progresses and
his lungs get 'phlegmy'.
Caine talks to camera incessantly, often while in
the middle of a conversation with others. The camera becomes Caine's
best friend and allows him to present his train of thought.
Along with the Harry Palmer spy movies, (Funeral in Berlin was
also released this year), Alfie helped make Caine an international
star.
The title role was initially offered to Anthony
Newley and Terence Stamp, but they turned it down.
