Til Death Us Do Part
In 1966 Mary Whitehouse attacked Til Death Us Do
Part. One episode contained 78 'bloodys' from the foul-mouthed Alf
Garnett. She had kept careful count.
Warren Mitchell played arch bigot Alf Garnett, who
found fault with everyone and everything except his beloved West
Ham United. Especially as three of England's 1966 World Cup winning
team played for the Hammers.
The target of most of Alf's bile was his own family
- his long-suffering wife Else, the 'Silly Moo' (Dandy Nichols),
daughter Rita (Una Stubbs), Rita's husband Mike (Tony Booth, Cherie
Blair's father) or 'The Scouse Git' as Alf liked to call him.
Til Death Us Do Part and the later series, In Sickness
and in Health, were frequently accused of being racist and sexist.
But creator Johnny Speight would always point out that Alf was the
figure of ridicule in the show, rarely coming out on top or having
his strident opinions being proved correct.
