Wherever he went, Frank Spencer brought chaos and confusion. Unfashionably attired in woolly tank-top and beret, he was a walking disaster: exploding machinery, destroying his house in a DIY frenzy, skating under a lorry and hanging cars over cliffs.
His long suffering wife, Betty, had to put up with expressive shoulder twitches and his infantile voice but she knew that he meant well and tried hard.
The series made a star out of Michael Crawford, but he had to work hard for his success; doing many of his own stunts and creating such a precise characterisation that impressionists found it impossible to copy.
