Before Nirvana's Kurt Cobain died he inspired a generation of boys to dress in dark, depressing colours, floppy clothes with fringes and as much stubble as they could muster.
Grunge had grown out of thrash metal and indie. It matched melodic
vocals with detuned guitars and driving basslines and is credited
with re-inventing stage-diving, crowd surfing and other extreme
forms of behaviour.
Grunge devotees would flock to festivals like Reading and Glastonbury, leaving a trail of roll-ups, neck braces and German Army surplus shirts as they went.
