Shaggy

Shaggy, with his worldwide hit Oh Carolina, helped put New York Reggae on the map.The same record began the Ragga boom of 1993.

Ragga incorporates hip hop and rhythm and blues elements. The explosion of Ragga also carried artists such as Shabba Ranks, Chaka Demus and Pliers, and Snow into the international pop charts.

Shaggy was born Orville Richard Burrell and moved from Kingston, Jamaica to America when he was 18 years old. He was in active service during the Gulf War but still managed to do gigs and studio sessions while he was in the Marines.

Oh Carolina first reached No. 1 in the New York Reggae Chart, but Shaggy later made it a chart hit all over Europe.
