The frenzy of teenage girls for clean-cut boy bands began late
in the 1980s when New Kids On The Block appeared on the scene.
For a moment, Manchester band Take
That came close to The Beatles' phenomenal popularity.
They had three number ones in 1993 - Pray, Re-light My Fire (featuring
Lulu) and Babe. Their popularity was due to their clean-cut image,
their dance routines and intensely catchy tunes.
A number of other boy bands cashed in on the girlie teenage craze
- including the not-so-clean-cut East 17, who had hits in 1993 with
Deep and It's Alright.
From the US came Backstreet Boys and Boyz II Men, whilst on this side
of the Atlantic Boyzone were getting ready to take the world by
storm.
