Boomtown Rats

Boomtown Rats were the first so-called New Wave band to appear on Top Of The Pops and did so with great relish.

They had knocked John Travolta and Olivia Newton John off the top spot and were so pleased with their achievement they tore up pictures of John Travolta as they began to sing!

The most famous member of the band is undoubtedly Bob Geldof who first made a name for himself as a music journalist and later for organising Band Aid to raise money for the 1984 famine in Ethiopia.
