The equivalent of today's hand-held computer, the Filofax was an essential fashion accessory for yuppies and a status symbol of the affluent youth.
It was a padded personal organiser comprising address book, diary, weights and measures, conversion charts and a map of the London Underground, especially useful if you lived in Glasgow. If you were very lucky it came with a flexible ruler that you could also use as a book mark.
As the paper was of no standard size known to man, and had a silly number of holes punched in it, you had to buy expensive official refills for your note book.
Apparently the Filofax was invented during World War I by a British army colonel and became popular with the military and members of the clergy.
