A Very Grand Affair!
The episode ''Elementary, Dear Data'' sees the android enter the holodeck as Sherlock Holmes, wearing a cloth hat and smoking a pipe. However, Geordi feels that the mysteries of Arthur Conan Doyle are too easy for his friend to solve and instructs the computer to create an opponent capable of beating Data. This turns Professor Moriarty into a sentient being who takes control of the Enterprise.
But in true Star Trek fashion, our heroes eventually regain control of the ship by promising to help him become real. Later on however, in the episode ''Ship in a Bottle'', it becomes obvious that nothing has been done about it and Moriarty once again takes control.
Familiarity Breeds Contempt!
Reginald Barclay (Dwight Shultz) feels awkward around others largely because of his lack of social skills. He spends much of his spare time relaxing in a holodeck programme based on ''The Three Musketeers'' where his colleagues appear as the main characters. That is until the episode "Hollow Pursuits", when he gets so addicted to living in this environment that he does not turn up for work. This results in Picard and crew finding out that Barclay has been recreating their images without permission.
Old Relics!
''Relics'' sees Mr Scott return to the bridge of the original Enterprise in a holodeck recreation where he shares a bottle of Aldebaran whisky with Picard. His drunken banter with the computer over which Enterprise bridge they should create is full of dark humour and subtle swearing.
Famous Scientists Play Poker!
The opening sequence of ''Descent, Part 1'' sees Data play poker with Sir Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking, all of whom are capable of matching his level of intelligence. However, the android is no match for the card playing skills of Professor Hawking who beats him with a royal flush.
The Old West!
In ''A Fistful Of Datas'', Worf's son Alexander creates a holodeck programme set in the environment of a western movie. He manages to persuade his father to participate in the adventure, along with Deanna Troi. Amusing scenes abound as we see the Klingon Security Officer wearing a cowboy hat and spurs instead of federation uniform. However, as in most holodeck-based episodes, all goes wrong when the outlaws become replicas of Commander Data and end up kidnapping Alexander.
Worf's Promotion!
When our heroes first appear in ''Star Trek: Generations'', we find them on a recreation of a tall ship called Enterprise. They have chosen this environment to promote Worf to Lieutenant Commander and force him to walk the plank.
Data is unsure why everyone is laughing when Worf falls in the water and so he pushes Dr Crusher overboard, believing that this is in the spirit of things. Unlike the rest of the movie, this scene is very light hearted, being further enhanced when the characters return to the bridge of the Enterprise-D in full naval uniform.
