London-based soap EastEnders went on air for the first time.

Steve Cram beat Sebastian Coe's record for the fastest mile in Oslo on 27th July, but travelling a little slower was Sir Clive Sinclair's 31-inch high battery-powered tricycle, the C-5.

In-ear headphones, CD-ROMs, Hi-8 camcorders and taxis with carphones hit the streets of the UK.

Wham! became the first Western group to perform and sell records in China.

Coca-Cola changed its 99-year-old recipe to a new "more rounded" formula, but was forced to switch back after an outcry from drinkers who hated the new taste.
