Rick Astley

Rick Astley

The be-quiffed crooner who put Newton-le-Willows briefly on the map (it's near Warrington, by the way) started out as a tea boy at the studios of producers Stock Aitken and Waterman.

The team that launched the pop careers of Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Sonia and Sinita gave their protegé hits with bubblegum songs Never Gonna Give You Up, Together Forever, and She Wants to Dance With Me, plus a Christmas smash with When I Fall In Love.

But Rick soon called it a day and disappeared into obscurity, briefly re-emerging to appear on the BBC's Never Mind the Buzzcocks, sporting long flowing locks and a big grin.
